In April 2026, 21 members enjoyed a visit to Crossness Pumping Station in South East London. Master-minded by Joseph Bazalgette,
this superb Grade I listed site dates from 1865 and is part of London's first major sewage system. Crossness is famous for its remarkable engineering and magnificent architecture. A true monument to Victorian vision, ambition and ingenuity.
On a glorious July evening, members of our u3a Modern Architecture Group together with friends and partners left Crown Pier by Blackfriars Bridge for a unforgettable architectural voyage of discovery along the Thames. Our tour guide was renowned architect, Benedict O’Looney, who provided a fascinating commentary on the historic significance of the buildings and landmarks along the riverfront and the modern additions by some of the world’s finest architects.
