Some notes on our latest book: 'The Cellist of Sarajevo' by Steven Galloway.
This is the a harrowing story of three residents of Sarajevo during the siege in 1992 which is hardly mentioned now amongst other wars which have happened further afield since. In May that year, 22 people waiting in a bread queue were shelled and 70 injured. For the next 22 days a cellist sat outside his house in the square in full evening dress and play in remembrance. He and a town sniper called Arrow were factual, the other characters are fictional but others similar may well have existed. One is charted waiting to cross the road to buy bread, the other climbing to get water, both journeys taking all day trying to spot and avoid snipers and shells in the hills around. As of 2009 the leaders of the Bosnian Serb army are still at large, avoiding charges for the 1deaths of 10.000 people, the wounding of 56,000 and the destruction of over 100,000 buildings.
