Next Topic: DNA of a Hit Song

What makes a song timeless?
At our next meeting, we are diving deep into the DNA of some of the world’s most iconic tracks from the disco flashpoint of the Bee Gees’ "Stayin' Alive" to Queen’s arena-shaking "Radio Ga Ga". We're going to dissect the masterpiece that is Steely Dan’s 1976 "Kid Charlemagne," to work out exactly how these legendary sounds were achieved; who was in the studio, Donald Fagen’s masterful prosody, Bernard Purdie’s pushed drum groove and Larry Carlton’s legendary guitar solo. We want to find the alchemy that turns a great song into an unforgettable hit.

About our Group:
What song is important to you and why? How did social history influence it and how did it influence other music?

Music holds the key to many of our memories so join us to share the music that has accompanied your life; on the radio, on the TV, at the cinema or records that you bought.

Recent meetings have included:
- A journey to rock music from The Beatles via Led Zeppelin to Green Day
- Memories of Newcastle concerts from from the 60’s and 70’s by Lindisfarne and Coliseum
- Great music festival performances
- Father & Son musicians
- Cover versions

Knowledge of music isn’t needed; just sit back and enjoy listening to the music accompanied by projected visuals of the artists and concurrent events. Afterwards, we can discuss the music, share interesting facts or memories of seeing the artists live.

About our Meetings:

Meetings last about 2 hours, during which we listen to members' choice of songs accompanied by interesting information about the performer, the song, the genre etc. Our listening can range across genres such as jazz, pop, folk and rock and will span from the 1950’s up to modern day.

We meet monthly, on a date to suit most members. Venue: Meetings are held in Tim’s loft opposite the Greyhound Inn. Please note: The venue is on the first floor with some stairs.
